Anniversary coin in 2023 to feature the motif "Triangle text"

In 2023, Norges Bank will issue a special edition 20-krone circulation coin to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Kartverket (The Norwegian Mapping Authority).

The establishment of Kartverket was a significant national event at a time when Norway was not yet an independent state. The maps helped to define the nation, they supported the defence of the territory and the establishment of critical infrastructure, and they helped put the land, coast and sea to use in new and safer ways.

Norges Bank invited five artists to participate in a competition to design the anniversary motif on the reverse of the coin. Torgeir Husevaag won the competition with the motif "Triangle text" (see photo).

The winning draft is a cartographic interpretation of Norway and Svalbard through 72 + 11 rectangles. The figure of Norway divides the face of the coin in two. The left shows longitude and latitude as well as Svalbard in an arc field. In its assessment, the jury writes, among other things:

"The stylized representation of Norway leads the mind towards map sheets, which Kartverket has produced since its establishment. It can also be understood as an image formed by pixels, an expression of the digital forms of work that dominate Kartverket's operations today."

The time of release of the coin will be determined later.
