Post Office 350th anniversary - coin issue

To mark the 350th anniversary of the Post Office, Norges Bank is issuing a specially designed 5-krone coin.

The Norwegian national lion and the denomination 5 KR are shown on the obverse of the coin. The motif on the reverse of the coin is a postman on horseback, copied from an ivory statuette from the end of the 1600s, with the legend POSTEN SKAL FRAM and the years 1647.1997. The origins of the statuette are uncertain, but it is assumed to have been carved by Halvor Andersen. The original statuette is now the property of the Science Museum in Trondheim. The coin was designed by Ingrid Austlid Rise of the Royal Norwegian Mint.

The coin will be launched in connection with the opening of the anniversary exhibition at the Sjølyst Centre in Oslo. The normal 5-krone circulation coin will not be minted in 1997.

In addition to coins for circulation, the coin will be struck in the following special qualities for coin collectors:

BU quality (brilliant uncirculated), 12 000 coins in plastic cassettes to be launched on 16 April 1997. Price: NOK 100.

UNC quality (uncirculated), max. 90 000 coin sets to be launched on 15 September 1997. Price: NOK 100.

PROOF quality, max. 15 000 coin sets to be launched on 1 October 1997. Price: NOK 540.
